Seasonal Guide to Visiting Table Mountain

What summer, autumn, winter, and spring feel like on the mountain and how each changes the plan.

Summer: long days and strong sun

South African summer brings long daylight windows and the highest demand. It can also bring intense sun, exposed hiking conditions, and the south-easterly wind associated with the tablecloth cloud. Aim for early starts, carry more water than you think you need, and avoid treating midday as the best hiking time.

Autumn: often balanced

Autumn can be one of the most comfortable periods, with softer light, less extreme heat, and still-useful daylight. Weather remains variable, but many visitors find this season easier for walking and photography. It is a good time for mixed plans that combine the summit with Kirstenbosch or the Atlantic coast.

Winter: crisp views between fronts

Winter brings shorter operating windows, cooler temperatures, and more rain systems, but it can also deliver remarkably clear air after fronts pass. Pack a warm layer and waterproof protection, and watch for wet rock if hiking. The reward is a quieter mountain and sharp views when conditions open.

Spring: flowers, wind, and renewal

Spring highlights fynbos and wildflowers, though wind remains part of the Cape Town equation. The mountain can feel alive with new growth, making it rewarding for slow summit walks and plant-focused visits. Stay on paths even when flowers tempt you toward a photograph.
