Before you leave
Check the forecast, cableway status if you plan to descend by cable car, and the route description from a reliable hiking source. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Download offline maps because signal can be inconsistent. Starting early is not just about cooler weather; it gives you a time margin if the route takes longer than expected.
What to carry
Carry at least water, sun protection, a warm layer, snacks, a charged phone, and shoes suitable for rock and uneven steps. In summer, the lack of shade on city-side routes can be punishing. In winter, wet rock and cold wind can turn a modest route into a much more demanding outing.
Decision points on the mountain
Turn back if cloud removes visibility, wind makes movement unstable, someone in the group is struggling, or you are behind schedule. The mountain will still be there tomorrow. Safe mountain judgment is not dramatic; it is the willingness to change plans early.
Respect for rescue systems
Cape Town has skilled mountain rescue responders, but preventable incidents put pressure on people and resources. Stay on paths, avoid solo high-risk routes, and do not treat online photographs as route instructions. If in doubt, hire a qualified local guide for complex hikes.
